Why I Work at KTC

It has been said that if exercise could be converted into a pill, it would rapidly become the most widely prescribed drug in the world. The simple truth is that there is no single drug that can provide you with all of the benefits that exercise can. As an exercise specialist and fitness coach, I’ve personally witnessed how exercise can strengthen individuals, families and entire communities. It is both an amazing experience and an incredible responsibility.
Most people think as a fitness coach, my job is to count reps or teach someone how to perform a biceps curl, and so on, but it's really a lot more than that. My job is to help you dig down deep and realize the potential inside you to reach health goals that you may have doubted were possible. My job is to learn about your interests, hobbies, job requirements and fitness dreams – and then give you the professional guidance and skill-sets needed to turn your body from the liability holding you back, to the machine required to achieve this freedom. Fitness and exercise are the medium that I use to help you feel something truly good about yourself...to allow you to get out of that rut and catch fire in your life.
Expertise
As someone who has worked in big box gyms for over a decade, I’ve seen many trainers come and go. For many it is a transient profession, following completion of a weekend course, and merely a stop on their way to something else. Having a passion for exercise is one thing, but coaching others how to exercise safely and effectively is quite different. It is an important distinction that requires caring AND knowing, and one that Dr. Carney understands well. Dr. Carney is deeply committed to not only continuing his own education, but also investing in the continuing education of his fellow KTC professionals, like myself. This stems from a genuine desire to provide the most current, and best possible care to his clients.
Kawartha Therapeutic Centre is a friendly, welcoming environment where professionals work together as a team, achieving more for you than we possibly could as individuals. It is difficult to adequately express the difference and pride that I feel here compared to the commercial gyms of my past, but it is real and I am sure it is a difference you will feel and appreciate as a client - and that is a good thing.
About Me
Proud father, athlete, and highly respected strength and conditioning coach, I have coached and inspired people of diverse abilities to achieve success. I know from personal experience what it is to overcome injury, illness, and surgery(s). These experiences have made it easier for me to support and connect with those facing their own adversity, and guide them through every step of their process.
As a fitness coach, my main area of expertise is making people more mobile, stronger, faster, and fitter than they thought possible through optimally designed exercise programs. Over the past decade, I have worked with kids as young as 5, and seniors up to 93 years old. My clientele has included clients with post-surgical joint replacement rehabilitation, cardiac rehabilitation & wellness, sports injury post-rehabilitation, physical disabilities, cancer patients, elite athletes in multiple sports, police officers, and even prisoners! I have helped clients conquer obesity and disability. I have helped improve the quality of life in clients with arthritis, diabetes, and a wide-variety of chronic conditions.
Areas of Practice
- Injury-related exercise rehabilitation
- Sport-specific training
- Customized weight-loss programs
- General & condition-specific nutrition coaching
- Chronic conditions including arthritis and diabetes
- Seniors-specific exercise programs
- Fall prevention & balance restoration
- Post-surgical rehabilitation
For most people, knowing where to start an exercise program is the most difficult part. As such, I incorporate a wide range of different assessment techniques, including breathing, postural, movement, to tests of functional capacity. This not only allows me to create a better program, but also establishes a baseline that measures how well the program is working. Results should be by design, not by coincidence!
I graduated from the University of Western Ontario with a Masters of Arts, and Honours Bachelor of Arts degrees in Kinesiology. I also became certified as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), by the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). Seeking to be a master at my craft, I believe that my greatest strength as a coach is that I have never stopped being a student. I am a coach that continually invests in myself through coaching, so that I can better serve the needs of my clients. I have also completed an internship with Ian King, attended numerous seminars, and completed many certifications and courses that include Seniors Fitness Instructor Course, Functional Movement Screen (FMS), CrossFit, and most recently, Precision Nutrition (Pn1).
Notable
I enjoy time with my family at the cottage, whether we’re hiking, fishing, paddle boating or making maple syrup, it’s always great to be together.
I wear a kilt and throw heavy things.
As a kid, I never thought of the gym as a place to work out, but as a place to play, compete, and learn...I never left and it has made all the difference.
